PREMIERE: Perhapsy - "Neverending Story" Video on Post-Trash

PT.png

by Torrey Proto (@torreysbrewin)

In the brilliantly weird new Adam Murphy-directed video for Perhapsy's wistful single "Neverending Story," the project's helmer Derek Barber is depicted as a zealot TV preacher selling religion to desperate viewers looking for help, complete with the phone number "1-800-555-JBUS" at the bottom of the screen for easy access. The video for the single from the Oakland-based songwriter’s latest album Kingdom Starlight Bliss flips between images of Barber's brainwashed disciples  wearing tin foil hats while manning the phone lines, vintage cinematography, real footage of past events, and a forest-dwelling vagabond who seems to be the only one who doesn't buy into his sermon. The loose-yet-poignant narrative and absurd combination of images lend a bit of levity to Barber's emotionally driven songwriting and it all comes together in a strangely satisfying way.

Perhapsy’s Kingdom Starlight Bliss is out now via Porch Party Records.

PREMIERE: Perhapsy - "The Curse Is Getting Worse"

42002903_539341549842166_1245345314648735694_n.jpg

Perhapsy, the solo project of California-based Derek Barber, has released “The Curse (Is Getting Worse)," an intricate and coloured entanglement of guitar and Barber’s soft-spoken voice. He murmurs the questions “who are you?” and “what are you?” as the electric strings sew together a weighted and vast first single.

Perhapsy began as an instrumental band during Barber’s years as a Jazz student at the University of Michigan. His music has proven to be an illustration of the resiliency of his spirit through his battle with mental illness, having been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder while on tour shortly after graduating. Barber arose from this struggle, entering the music world once again with penned lyrics on living with mental illness and day-to-day life and all the complications that can bring. For his first single off upcoming album, “The Curse” is no exception, tackling the topic of pursuing something while having self-doubt, as Perhapsy puts it:

“It’s easy to wonder “who” and “what” you really are when you’re over-concerned with what other people think. I think there’s sort of a “curse” attached to being a musician or artist in that there’s no avoiding these things. However, there’s also something beautiful there: if you feel compelled to make art and music, you’re going to do it regardless. I think maybe that’s what “the curse” is.”

Apart from launching Perhapsy, Barber also strums in acts Madeline Kenney, Bells Atlas and Curls. His new album, Kingdom Starlight Bliss, drops November 23rd with Porch Party Records, marking Perhapsy’s fourth full length album.

PREMIERE: Rufrano · "I Wanna Hit You" (R. Stevie Moore Cover)

Screen Shot 2018-07-11 at 6.24.43 PM.png

Untamable pop genius R. Stevie Moore has been living free outside the confines of the music industry for decades, sending secret transmissions to each new generation. You Ariel Pink and Puro Instinct fans probably already love him, but now Long Beach’s Porch Party Records is on board and then some with their new tribute comp Sensual Harrassment: Various Artists Outperform the Hits of R. Stevie Moore, titled (and subtitled) with particularly R-Stevie-an elan. (Says Porch Party’s Casey Terrazas: “We hope this release introduces more curious listeners to his incredible music.”) There’s a heavy Long Beach presence here and plenty of L.A. RECORD alums, too, including Joel Jerome, Dustin Lovelis and William Alexander, and this cover by the indomitable (Rachel) Rufrano is a charismatically unsettling version of the charismatically unsettling original, which you can watch and learn in this too-close-and-personal video by R. Stevie. Sensual Harassment is out tomorrow and you can pre-order from Porch Party here.

PREMIERE: Dustin Lovelis · "Pop Music" (R. Stevie Moore Cover)

Screen Shot 2018-07-11 at 6.18.14 PM.png

Who know exactly how much music R. Stevie Moore has released. Some say it’s around 400 albums (which “might seem stretching it a bit,” he has said); there are some 200 releases on his Bandcamp page; and the “official” releases via labels number in the dozens.

No matter how prolific, the lo-fi recording pioneer and DIY hero, now 66 years old, has inspired many (Ariel Pink credits Moore as a mentor), spreading his legend via mail-order cassettes. Next month he will be honored with a tribute album — released by Long Beach’s Porch Party Records via cassette, of course — that features a host of Southern California artists (including Matt Costa, Joel Jerome, Lens Mozer and Greater California) covering Moore’s songs.

It’s the brainchild of Dustin Lovelis, who’s released two solo albums himself (2015’s “Dimensions” and 2017’s “Been Hit Before”) and confesses to having been smitten by Moore’s extensive catalog. When Lovelis had gathered up all the tracks for the tribute album, he sent them to Moore. To Lovelis’ surprise, Moore responded — and even gave a name to the compilation: “Sensual Harassment: Various Artists Outperform the Hits of R. Stevie Moore” (out July 6).

RELIGIOUS GIRLS - "Power Pt. 2" Video Premiere + Q&A

JUNE 8, 2018

Religious Girls - "Power Pt. 2" | Post-Trash Premiere

by Nik Soelter

Religious Girls are a band of contradictions. On the one hand, their albums are serious - composed over long stretches of time, with meticulous attention to detail and densely layered arrangements, while on the other, the bands online persona is often shrouded in irony and self-deprecating humor.

Their art is angular, fractal, and modern, but other times, intentionally recalls early aughts vaporwave, like a digitally rendered Monster Energy can that reads, “Religious Girls: Pure Energy”. The music is emotional, but not so vulnerable that they would actually commit to lyrics (in our interview, vocalist Christopher Danko says “each song contains the lyrics "ooooh" "ahhh" "oh" "yo", "yoo" "mmmbop" and maybe a "meow"). The band is a continuous experiment in how to make dark, serious music without losing your sense of humor.

Their most recent album, 2017’s Pure Energy, is the groups first in more than four years. Recorded mostly in Brooklyn during 2014, the trio, who have since paired down to the duo of Danko and Nicholas Cowman, spent the next several years making adjustments in Oakland. Across 6 songs and 40 minutes, the band haven’t missed a beat. They invent their own universe across it’s sprawling tracks, with almost drumline esque percussion juxtaposed against ambient tones.

Today we’re premiering their video for “Power Pt. 2,” a euphoric onslaught of polyrhythms and emotive synths that recalls the inventive indie of the early aughts. Impressive drum fills backdrop hypnotic melodies, and over time the group find calm in the center of this chaos, only to tear it all down moments later, concluding the track with a stop-start, free-jazz freakout.

The video was shot in the now shuttered San Francisco Armory, a massive, maze-like structure where until last fall, Kink.com was headquartered. Directed by Danko, the video is a perfect example of the band pitting a serious live performance, complete with 3D rendered fractals and overlapping shots, against playful images of the group standing astride both a dirtbike and a full on jet ski that they hauled down into the Armory’s depths.

Check it out below, and read this writers interview with the band where we discuss the video, Pure Energy’s recording process, future collaborations, and what it takes to sustain a long term project like Religious Girls.

Religious Girls: Song Premiere + Q&A | Impose Mag

Impose Magazine premieres the debut single "Respect" off the upcoming LP "Pure Energy" out August 11th.

And in this half decade time the East Bay has never faltered in its rising wealth of being true innovative international leaders in possessing some of the pop art world’s greatest talents, collectives and industries of aesthetic evolution. Pop noise anomaly Religious Girls return with a sharpened and earth shattering precision approach to distortion with their upcoming fall slated album for Porch Party Records. The first offering “Respect” starts with vintage keys slowly surface while a ghostly other treated effect enters into the audio picture. And that is when Religious Girls’ Christopher Danko, Nicholas Cowman & Luis Gutiérrez kick-in the beat arrangements that course through the track at various tempos and styles throughout the five minute song’s different suite sections. The track is an anthem dedicated, if not committed, to expressing through imaginative electronic soundscapes a symbol of “Respect”; exhibiting an ambitious spin on even the most seemingly sophisticated electro-odyssey college EDM conceits, conventions & expectations are thrown to the wind as Religious Girls spin glimmering keys & rolling percussion into mind carousel that awakens the senses to a meditative like state. Join us after the following debut of “Respect” as we catch up with everything that has been happening with Religious Girls, Oakland, activism, and more.

PREMIERE: "Love Nights" by LITRONIX

Screen Shot 2017-06-13 at 10.53.25 AM.png

New LITRONIX single "Love Nights" now premiering on B-Sides & Bandlands.

"The tousled, guitar-seasoned “Love Nights,” a more organic, breathy entry on his otherwise psychedelic and spacey LP. Premiering exclusively today, the mid-tempo rattles, too, with the love-torn rendezvous which “is a special moment in life,” he tells B-Sides & Badlands. “The romance, the teasing, the building all through the long night, and before you know it, you’ve been swept up in the riptides, no way to control, just taken by tides, in and out…in and out of the currents.”

“And then as the night progresses, the pressure starts building so strong, so real, that it’s you and your companion’s destiny to finally release in perfect harmony and exact timing as the sun is coming up. This is a true Love Night. What sparked it for me, was having this actual experience as the song is written,” he continues. “It kind of flowed. I was experimenting with looping my acoustic guitar in standard tuning for a change, and the melody just seemed to come effortlessly.  The Love Night happened around that same time, so I just thought that this is the perfect subject for these chords.”

THE GENTLE HITS - Debut Album Nov 18 - (members of DEAR AND THE HEADLIGHTS // WHAT LAURA SAYS)

--- CLICK HERE TO PRE ORDER CD / DIGI  ---

The Gentle Hits are an indie rock-folk band from Phoenix, Arizona that have deep roots in the international music scene.  Ian Metzger, lead songwriter and vocalist, drummer Mark Kulvinskas, and multi-instrumentalist James Mulhern, all gained a wide-scale following with their critically acclaimed projects Dear and the Headlights and What Laura Says.  After taking a bit of a hiatus- followed, perhaps by a stint of “Hey you should focus a minute and get your shit together cause your life just fell apart”- Metzger, Mulhern, and Kulvinskas could not help but return to their love of making music.

The Gentle Hits’ debut album will release on Porch Party Records November 18th.

---

From Ian Metzger himself:

"I’ve always made the choice to write songs about my own experience. I often think of what others are experiencing but have no intention of assuming I know how they feel. I prefer to start from the center. If I can express my own life clearly then I know that my experience won’t be too far off from yours. I lost a father, my wife gave me two more daughters, I started a life without references, I worked 40 hours a week in a grocery store. I wrote an album about it. I have three good friends who decided that they wanted to help me make it sound bigger. We really hope this finds you when you need it most."

RELIGIOUS GIRLS - New Album in 2017

"Pure Energy" out 2017 on Porch Party Records.

“Artfully pulling my mind in new directions…the songs specifically deny verse-chorus-verse formula, and because they're never repeating structures, it feels like the musical equivalent of a helium balloon set free in the sky. There's no grounding structure, no repeating theme to draw you back to earth.”
